Applying to the Graduate Program in Statistics

Admission Requirements

Students seeking admission to the M.A. Program in Statistics at the University of South Florida should satisfy the following requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Statistics, other mathematical sciences, or a related area
  • Minimum score of 151 (current scale) or 650 (prior scale) on the Quantitative portion of the GRE General Test
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5 (on a scale of 4.0) in undergraduate Statistics/Mathematics courses

Students seeking admission to the Ph.D. Program in Statistics at the University of South Florida should satisfy the following requirements:

  • Either:
    • A Master's degree or equivalent in Statistics or a related area; or
    • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Statistics, other mathematical sciences, or a related area with a strong record of undergraduate/graduate Statistics courses
  • Minimum score of 151 (current scale) or 650 (prior scale) on the Quantitative portion of the GRE General Test
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5 (on a scale of 4.0) in graduate and/or upper undergraduate Statistics courses

Note: At the discretion of the Graduate Admissions Committee, Ph.D. applicants may be recommended for admission to the Master's Program provisionally. The Graduate Admissions Committee may also provisionally admit applicants from other majors to the Master's Program if they meet the GPA requirement.

Students interested in our Ph.D. program are welcome to visit our campus to learn more about the Program. Interested students should contact the Graduate Program Coordinator, TBA, for details.

Application Deadlines

Application deadlines for international applicants and teaching assistants are:

  • Fall term: June 1st
  • Spring term: August 1st

Application deadlines for US citizens and US permanent residents who do not seek financial assistance are:

  • Fall term: February 15th
  • Spring term: October 1st

Graduate Application and Supplementary Application Forms

Applicants should apply either to the USF Graduate School or International Graduate Admissions:

  1. Applications to the USF Graduate School are online: USF Graduate Admissions Application.
  2. International students should apply to International Graduate Admissions.

Upload the following department forms with the USF Graduate Admissions online application (above):

  1. Application form for Graduate Study in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. THE ONLINE AND DEPARTMENT APPLICATIONS ARE REQUIRED. Please submit both applications or your admissions file will be incomplete. Click on the links above for access.
  2. Application form for Graduate Teaching Assistantship (if applying for a Teaching Assistantship).
  3. Letters of Recommendation: (3 RECOMMENDATION LETTERS ARE REQUIRED FROM QUALIFIED RECOMMENDERS; at least two (2) of the recommenders should be College or University-level Statistics/Mathematics Professors who taught the applicant in advanced statistical coursework or who supervised the applicant on a research project of a statistical nature. Letters should be substantial and should address statistical abilities and potential for success in the field of interest.)

Please note:

  • Completed forms for items (1) and (2) should be uploaded with your VZ online Admissions application.
  • Request three (3) Letters of Recommendation by e-mail with your VZ Application. Please see Number 3 above for requirements. Instructions for uploading letters are sent to the recommenders with your request.
  • Upload copies of all transcripts for the department's review. Official transcripts of your undergraduate and graduate (if any) degrees should be sent directly to the Office of Admissions. No official decision can be made regarding your application without the official transcripts being received by the Office of Admissions.

  • Uploading all documents with the Office of Admissions online Application is preferred. If you experience problems, you may contact the Office of Admissions at 813-974-3350. When your application is complete with all required documents, please inform the department's Graduate Coordinator, TBA.

  1. For international students, submitting official passing English speaking scores is a University requirement. Please see this website: Office of Graduate Studies, University Admissions Criteria and Policies.
  2. For reporting GRE and/or English test scores, the institution code for USF is 5828. See your respective program's webpage for GRE requirements.
